Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse Review

Fresh visuals and a zany collection of Spider-Men help keep Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse from simply being standard super hero fare.

Miles Morales is just another teenager from Brooklyn, until he is bit by a radioactive spider granting him the abilities of Spider-Man. Miles grows through the traditional growing pains of becoming a superhero, except in his story he is visited by other Spider-Men from different universes. Forming an alliance, the group of wildly different heroes connected by their Spiderly roots must stop Kingpin from screwing up the time continuum or something.

At first glance, I was turned off by the bold choice of animation style; it simply didn’t work for me. Fast forward some months later, and the film is being reviewed at nearly 100% fresh. I guess I have to give it a look now, right? And I’m glad I did. This movie is lots of fun. It is humorous, it is flashy, and it is never dull. There weren’t any stretches in the movie where you impatiently wait for something to start happening again, watching Into the Spider-Verse is a breeze. The voice acting work is all solid, from Nicolas Cage to Jake Johnson to Kathryn Hahn and John Mulaney. They all personify a variety of unique interesting characters who deserved more development. At times, the animation can get blurry and yes, the movie can be predictable. But the story is told right and the film’s flamboyance keeps it fresh. Unsure about whether to see this film? Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is better than Incredibles 2, and it isn’t even close. 9/10
